CHAPTER SIX

Katie glared at the rows of spinach and ran through the recipe in her brain again. She hadn’t missed anything, she was sure of it. That meant the problem was with her, not the potion. She frowned, annoyed, and decided she would just have to put up with slightly-less-perfect spinach for the time being. The potion she’d mixed— mostly ashes from raspberry bush roots— hadn’t done the job and balanced out the bitterness. But one of the first lessons the coven had taught her was her powers wouldn’t work quite the same way if she was angry about something, and that extended to making and applying potions to her crops. She had always considered that to be a completely bullshit limitation on her powers— none of Linnea’s powers had such blockages— but it seemed to be accurate. Grief had a marginally dampening effect, but it was when she was angriest with the world that her powers seemed to fail her the most.

Being an Earth Witch meant your powers were often invisible to the world. That much Katie didn’t mind, because it wasn’t any of the world’s damn business if she was a witch or not. But that invisibility also made it harder to judge when things were going wonky. Her usual failsafe was to see if she could make a flower bloom just by touching a bud, but she hadn’t tried that lately because she suspected she’d fail at that, too. The spinach was just this side of bitter, and Earth Witch powers were all about balance. And no amount of potions would right what was curling and twisting inside her. She stood up, brushed off her knees, and went back to the house. She knew how to fix this problem but quite frankly, she didn’t want to just yet.
